On January 27, 1945, Soviet troops were the first soldiers to liberate the Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi death camp in Krakow, Poland. Between 1.1 and 1.5 million people, most of them Jews, were murdered at the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp using gas chambers or the infliction of disease, starvation, abuse and exhaustion.

Auschwitz is the most notorious of Adolf Hitler's Nazi death camps , but all tolled, 6 million Jews died in the Nazi camps, along with several million others, including Soviet prisoners of war, Gypsies, homosexuals and Nazi political opponents.
