Any time is a good time to head outside to hike, camp, backpack, picnic and enjoy other recreational pursuits, but Saturday, June 13, has been designated National Get Outdoors Day to encourage healthy, active outdoor fun.

Kids Ride Free at Texas State Railroad State Park

Share the experience of riding on a historic steam train through the Pineywoods of East Texas. Kids 12 and under ride free with paying adult, limit five kids free per paying adult, applies to families, school and youth organizations.

When: Every Thursday through Sunday.

Cost: Kids free with a paying adult (limit 5 kids free per adult); Adults: $14 Texas State Parks Pass members, $16 non-members and senior citizens; reservations required (800) 442-8951.

WHEN: The Second Saturday of each month.

TIME: Registration 8:00 - 9:00 AM

MEET AT: The For the Love of the Lake Office, Casa Linda Plaza at the intersection of Garland Road and Buckner Boulevard. They are under the old Eckerd's location, facing Buckner and Doctors Hospital, and next door to Alliance Therapy. They'll have a yummy continental breakfast for you featuring hot Starbucks coffee, goodies from Great Harvest Bread Co., delicious orange juice and rich chocolate milk from Schepps Dairy, and refreshing Rain Fresh bottled water. They also supply all your spruce-up supplies, including trash bags, recycle bags (courtesy of Trinity Waste Services), and gloves courtesy of Medicine Associates.

Marsh Airboat Tours at Sea Rim State Park

Sea Rim's marshes support a variety of animal and plant life, including fish, mammals, birds and reptiles, most notably the American alligator. Tours provide an approximately 45-minute guided tour into the marsh interior to view this unique environment.

When: Every Wednesday through Sunday. 9 AM to 2 PM daily.

Cost: $15 adults, $10 children 6-11, free for children 6 and under; reservations recommended (409) 971-2559.

Evening Bat Flights at Devil's Sinkhole State Natural Area

Peer down into the depths of Texas and observe up to 3 million bats emerge. A short program will be given on Devil's Sinkhole and bats. Visitors are shuttled in a tour bus from Rocksprings Visitor Center to the site.

When: Every Wednesday through Sunday; Call for reservations and times:

Cost: $10 adults, $8 senior citizens, $6 children 12 and under; reservations required!

Texas Water Safari

The Safari is a long, tough nonstop, marathon canoe racing adventure, which traverses 260 miles of challenging rivers and bays. Although the rate varies from year to year depending on water conditions, in previous Safaris as few as two teams out of sixty starters managed to reach the finish line. Many participants enter the Safari with no intention of winning, but with aspirations of joining the elite group of finishers and earning the coveted Texas Water Safari patch.
