While answering a question I received on WildTexas.com, I thought I'd share the following information:
As of February 15, 2006, 185 whooping cranes are still in their winter breeding grounds in Texas. This information comes from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service's U.S. Whooping Crane Coordinator (and pilot), Tom Stehn. His
full report is online, as are all his
previous whooping crane reports.
With this in mind,
it's not too late to book a Whooping Crane Boat Tour out of Rockport-Fulton, Texas. Captain Tommy Moore (no relation to Justin or myself) runs the premier birding tour boat, the famed
Skimmer, on these tours as well as spring migratory bird tours. *** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! *** Since the whooper-viewing season is winding down,
reservations are recommended! Tell 'em Shannon & Justin at
WildTexas.com sent ya!
