Question What in the world was that?

Need help identifying a snake I saw over the weekend.

While driving on a back road near Giddings, Texas I came across a snake sunning itself. I didn't know what type of snake it was and am very curious to see if anyone can figure it out:

The snake was about 4 - 4.5 feet long. The head was not distinctly triangular - just regular. The coloring on the snake was a brilliant black. Down its length where perfectly shaped diamonds that consisted of four squares each. The diamonds were a brilliant yellow. There was about 1/2" - 1" between each diamond, so they didn't touch. There was no rattle at the end of the tail. It never even moved as my truck went by and even after I stopped didn't seem at all interested at moving out of the way.

I've not found a darned thing that has help ID this snake. SO - I'm hoping that one of y'all might know.

Thanks,
Brenda

see if you can find a picture of a desert kingsnake. the bright yellow dots in the center of most scales are sometimes arranged in patterns. did the snake appear more black or more yellow?

The snake was definitely more black on top than yellow. We just had a rat snake caught at our office - the coloring wasn't anything like the one I'm trying to figure out.
