Question What Bird is this??

Hey guys, I am new to the forum!

Anyways, I was walking one day in my backyard and I came across this most beautiful bird. I have a picture but I am unsure how to put it up on the site, so I will describe him. He is really REALLY small and flies like he is a baby (really quick wings) and he is very fast. He has a red head that is sort of fluffy and a red breast, but his wings are black with a hint of white on the tips. His neck is black too.. He has a very tiny beak too. I honestly do not know anything about birds and what is rare or not, but my cousin said that this is an endangered bird and I would like to know what it is. However, I CANNOT find anything on this bird anywhere.. can someone help me?

This link has a pic of the bird, but I am unsure if it will work correctly, but here you go!

Vermilion Flycatcher

Welcome to Wild Texas, Nichele!

That beautiful bird is a vermilion flycatcher. Aren't they gorgeous?

They are not endangered, but they are a treat to see in most of Texas -- I've only seen one once in my (suburban) backyard in San Antonio.

Here are some sites with photos and/or information about the little beauty:

Thanks for replying! I actually discovered yesterday while searcing on the net, what that bird was.. and yes it is a beauty. I also really appreaciate your other sites because now I realize that I have two females and one nest (so far that I see). The eggs do sound correct and the female is cute too, but the male is extraordinary! Thanks for the findings... Yea I live around San Antonio and well.. I think we have a 'farm' so to speak of flycatchers! How wonderful!!!

Hi, what a beautiful bird. I am new today and have a lot of nature photos, how do you download them into this site? You mentioned you weren't sure how to do it, but you did it. Thanks Marge

(This is Shannon answering, but my computer is dead right now so I'm on Justin's computer...)

Actually, those particular photos are posted on another website.

To post photos on WildTexas.com in our "Your Photos" gallery:
  • Click on the Your Photos button or link from anywhere on our website.
  • Then, click on the Upload Photos. (If you don't see an "upload photos" link, you need to click on the Log In link first so the system will recognize you.)
  • Follow the screen prompts and instructions on the "upload photos" page, and you'll be on your way to sharing photos with other Wild Texans!

Just holler if you have any difficulties -- I'll be glad to help.

- Shannon
