Visiting San Antonio - Need help with park/wildlife recommendations

Hello, all. My wife is attending a conference in San Antonio from May 2 - 7, and I will have a few of those days free. Being a wildlife nut, I don't want to squander my opportunity to see some neat stuff while visiting Texas. I'm mostly interested in herps (amphibians and reptiles) and invertebrates (yes, those arachnids and insects), but just being outdoors is wonderful for me.

Does anyone have suggestions of places to visit that are no more than 30-45 minutes from San Antonio? Heck, if it's a special place, I'd even drive an hour or so. I've looked at my atlas and have looked a little online, but I figured I'd get much better information from people who LIVE in Texas.

Thank you in advance for the input!
~ Aaron

Head out of SA straight north on 281 a few miles. Puts you into the Texas Hill Country. Just shy of being in heaven, as far as I'm concerned. April's the best time to be there but I don't believe there really is a "bad" time to be in the Hill Country. Just driving around the area is a "soul cure" for DW and myself.

I would suggest a stop at any of the State Parks with Guadalupe River SP being "top of the hit parade". Pedernales and Blanco SP's and their surrounding areas should interest you, as well. Have a few sites:

Teaxas Parks & Wildlife
Guadalupe River SP
Pedernales Falls SP
Blanco SP

Hope this helps. Welcome to Texas and happy camping!

Red face Re: Visiting San Antonio - Need help with park/wildlife recommendations

Hi Aaron,

Just looked back at this and noted that by the time I had read your original post and responded, it was already too late. Sorry I didn't see your post sooner. I hope you had a great trip to San Antonio! If your coming this way again, feel free to e-mail direct and I'll be glad to help.

Happy Camping!
