Red Shouldered Hawks

We ran a few errands this morning. Upon pulling into the drive way, I heard screeching. Son and I walked down the drive and looked up to see 3 Red Shouldered Hawks, flying and gliding around above our street. I've not seen them or heard them here before. There are high power lines and a large easement behind our house which workers have been clearing out lately. I wonder if that has upset these birds and disturbed their food source's habitat ( mice).

I went over to the neighbors house ( they are outdoor folks/hunters) and asked if they had noticed anything. They said they've been here since yesterday. Maybe they've even enjoyed water from their bird bath. Their dogs were going nuts this morning and they had no idea why.

Its a pleasant surprise to see them still in town. I guess the airplanes are taking a different route this week, and I just hadn't noticed the quietness. Sure is neat to see and hear them, if you close your eyes, you can pretend you are standing on a scenic overlook at South Llano or Perdernales. Ok son, just pretend, get out of the street, a car is coming. Back to reality.

Re: Red Shouldered Hawks

I saw our friendly hawk sitting on the back fence yesterday. He was waiting to spot a meal in the easement behind the house. I turned for the camera and returned to catch a glimse of him snatching a mouse. My housecats didn't even notice him. Anyone else live in town and have hawks?

Re: Red Shouldered Hawks

We have a couple different hawks that hang out on our back fence near our oleander occasionally -- laying in wait for an unsuspecting dove, finch or sparrow to alight on one of the oleander branches or our deck railing.

Most recently -- just a couple weeks ago, in fact -- we had a Coopers hawk in our backyard for an hour or so. I do not think he was successful in catching a meal, though. We have also had a red shouldered hawk but that was roughly a year ago; he came by fairly often for about a month and then we stopped seeing him. I guess he moved on.

We, too, have an easement (read: flood plain) behind our home, and although it is not heavily wooded (just scrub) it is nice to have back there. Growing up, almost all of the homes I ever lived in with my parents had a greenbelt or other open space behind the house. My folks have an awesome, heavily wooded greenbelt behind them and the variety and sheer number of birds they get in their backyard (which, to be fair, is much larger than ours) is truly amazing.

If you are not in the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology's PROJECT FEEDERWATCH, I highly recommend it. It's an annual, winter-long count of birds in your area and the data is collected and studied by Cornell and other bird study groups to understand bird species distribution, general health of the population and to note changes due to environmental or other factors. It's really a treat and is celebrating its 20th year this year.

My mom's participating in FeederWatch for the first time this year, and is quite excited to report her counts each week. Justin and I have been members off and on for over 10 years -- some years we paid the membership but didn't submit counts because we lived in an apartment or whatnot, but we're participating again this year. It's great for kids, too, once they're old enough to identify common birds; my 2-year-old niece in Dallas knows bluejay, cardinal, mockingbird, dove and ducks -- they live near a pond, so she gets to see the latter fairly often.

Re: Red Shouldered Hawks

Father-in-law has a hawk that hangs out in his back yard up Babcock Rd just a bit away from Huebner. There is one that hangs out here @ W. Military, too... I just got a new cam and am hoping to shoot a few pics of these guys at some point, but so far working and going to school (both full time) have cut severely into my play time. Anyhow, registered just to post my S.A. Hawk sightings!

Rey :)

Re: Red Shouldered Hawks

Heard the hawks again Friday but couldn't locate with the overcast skies. Guess they like the field mice 'round here.
