Re: Hummingbirds

The territorial battles are starting to heat up with more and more birds moving into the area. I even saw a poor butterfly get chased away from our Pentas by one of those buzz-bombers.

Put your feeders out even if you don't have any flowering plants. The birds will find them.

Re: Hummingbirds

Would not have thought there would be a big difference between north and coastal Texas. I have had hummers all summer long in Palo Pinto county. The same was true in past years so I know it is not a one time occurence.

Re: Hummingbirds

Unfortunately, we don't have the pleasure of seeing the birds all summer long, at least not in my yard.

I have flowering plants that would attract them but it must be the migration patterns that send them north to nest.

Re: Hummingbirds

Well, I don't mean to brag but we have THREE hummers. Eat your hearts out. Really it is not many but more than normal at this time for us. In the past we have had as many as 25 but that has not happened for the last five years. I keep feeding and watching, if we get six or so I will be happy. Our friends up on the Frio have bunches all summer long. Wish I did.

Yes, there's lots of Hummingbirds here.. We have a few Hummingbird feeders and when filled.. we can have many as 8 (sometimes more) hovering around. They can suck up that stuff quick! Woodpeckers seem to like it too...

Re: Hummingbirds

How do you get those "children" to behave so that more than one can feed at the same feeder at the same time?

Right now I have one bird that feels like he owns the whole yard.

Re: Hummingbirds

Thats way we are putting up some more feeders, and spend them out,the bullies run out of steam trying to chase off the others.Today while refilling we got buzzed a few times by a large Rubie.

Re: Hummingbirds

I know this is an old post but.... pre-Ike we had gotten upwards to 20 hummers in our yard and decided to keep the feeders up til late Friday before the storm. I mourned the fact that we would probably lose the hummers at least for the rest of this season. Fast forward to late Saturday morning (post Ike) and we were sitting at our table looking out the window at all the mess that we had from the storm and we see two hummers searching for their morning breakfast that we give them. Believe me, I qiuckly made a batch of hummingbird feed and put out three feeders by early midday and by afternoon we had all of them back and they brought friends with them. We have enjoyed them so much and never once debated the fact that I was using bottled water to feed them. I guess we considered them our luxury after the terrible storm.

The soul finds comfort in many things. If you need water for yourself, or those hummers, let me know where to send it and a case will be on its way. Those little bundles of energy can take your mind off of the challenges of life post Ike.

Re: Hummingbirds

Does anybody still have the little critters buzzing around? I was totally shocked yesterday to see one briefly visit my hummingbird bush, which at this point in the season looks rather sad.......still a few blooms but mostly wilted.

This is the latest I've seen one in our area. I would guess that there are still some in deep south Texas.

Re: Hummingbirds

Tod, no doubt you don't need me for this, but there are a few that stick around for the winter duration, some of which are even Rufous hummers. It takes greater fortitude than I claim to stay with the program long enough to actually see 'em, but they're certainly documented well enough. So perhaps you might wanna keep at it (so I can live vicariously through you?).

I hate to admit it, but I've sorta lost interest in my hummerfeeders since only one bird is ever at any one feeder at any time - beating off all competition as per their wont. I want to see swarms, and even just two or three would constitute a swarm for me; in the meantime I feel like I'm maintaining a whole feeder for just one rather nasty-tempered little guy or gal and so I concentrate instead on my other bird feeders.

Quick ... say something to make me think differently!

I still have one little guy. he looks so lonely out there all by himself. I only see him every few days so I'm afraid not to keep something out in-case he comes by. This is the latest I have ever seen then here in SA.
