Golden cheek warblers

If anyone in the San Antonio area is into birding, and would like to volunteer for the city looking for golden cheek warblers and helping to define the extent of their habit in some natural areas that aren't yet open, let me know, and I'll put you in touch with the right person (I don't want to broadcast her info though)- its a great group of people, and they can really use the help. I'm going to participate, but I'll have to learn as I go- the more people who already know what they're doing/what they're looking for the better off we'll all be.

and hey, if you're like me, and DON'T know what you're doing, but would like to help out anyway, you are more than welcome too

Re: Golden cheek warblers

(I'm talking to myself again...)

Just in case any birders are checking this out... We have seen Golden Cheeked Warblers in the San Antonio area recently. If you're interested, check out Freidrich Wilderness Park just NW of San Antonio, kind of near the intersection of 1604 & I-10... but stay on the trails- you wouldn't want to disturb the nesting of this protected bird.

I'm not a big time birder, insofar as I often misidentify species that "real birders" could ID blindfolded and half asleep. However, I love bird life (and all wildlife), and find them immensely entertaining and educational creatures.

That said, in all my years in San Antonio (25, or thereabouts), if I've ever seen a golden-cheeked warbler, I didn't know what I'd just seen. All the darn vireos and many of the warblers all "look the same to me." I'm better with showy birds -- "Aha, a painted bunting! Oh, yes, a common loon! Hey, a female merganser duck! A pyrrhuloxia and a loggerhead shrike in the cacti over there!" Little birds that won't sit still if their life depended on it? I'm lucky if I mutter, "Ah, a vireo or wren!"

Re: Golden cheek warblers

well, I'm just learning my birds- I'm sure you can identify way more than me, especially since I've only lived here about a year. But I've been listening to tapes of golden cheeked warblers and black capped vireo bird calls for the past month or so, and I got the golden cheeked warblers down pretty good I think.

The black capped vireo will be hard. I think their song is very close to other vireos. thats going to take a little more work.

Incidently, I heard via word of mouth that the windmill area of Fredrick park is a good spot to hear the golden cheeked warbler. I'm also willing to bet that further back in the more remote trails are probably pretty good.

Re: Golden cheek warblers

while I was out in a restircited area on April 9th, I actually visually identified a GCW i was awfully excited. kind of surprised myself. I think I heard that during this study last year, no visual confirmations had been made- all evidence had been auditory.
