Freshwater Aquariums

Hey gang! I trust everyone's enjoying a safe but wonderful March. I have a question I'm hoping some of you can assist me with --

I want to set up a simple freshwater aquarium at home again. During my teenage years, I had several small, basic freshwater aquariums and my parents had one (I believe) 25 gallon tank. I miss having fish, and am relatively cognizant of things like pH monitoring, water temperature, tank location and the like. However, I'm wondering if anyone reading this is actively into home aquaria and has any suggestions -- things like recommended online suppliers, recommended local (San Antonio, in my case) live fish suppliers (*not* PetCo, if I can help it), recommendations on a good tank size that's attractive, provides adequate room for several compatible species of fish and some nice decor (plastic plants, at this point). When I was active in this stuff, there was a "Mom 'n Pop" pet place near my parents home that was the ONLY place we trusted to get illness-free fish and reasonable prices on all aquaria accessories.

I guess I'm at a total loss now, and it's been bothering me. Is it feasible to order live freshwater fish from any of the online retailers -- I see many have "14 day" or more guarantees but buying fish sight-unseen is rather like buying a pet that way!

I know, twenty questions. I've been growing Sea Monkeys for the past 8 months and I want a real aquarium again with *real* fish.
