Fall Time Hummers

We have seen alot more Rubies at the feeders this week , Looks like they are getting ready to make the Fall Migration. We have 4 large and 2 small feeders out, and Rubies are in at all hours feeding. We have had a really bad Honey Bee problem her with the bees trying to take over feeders.Had to add screens mounted on feeders, but they still buzz around them.

Re: Fall Time Hummers

Getting the same thing here. They seemed to slow down last week and I was wondering if they might have left a bit early. This week, their back in force and really fighting hard to get at the feeder. Haven't had any issues with bees this year. Usually struggle to keep the ants out of the feeder but that hasn't even been an issue. I use a good sized dab of vasoline on the rod the feeder hangs on to stop the ants. Works well but usually has to be replenished a time or two through the season. Haven't touched it since the feeder was hug in early May.

Guess we'll see how much longer they hang around. Don't figure it will be more then a week or two and then they'll be gone untill next spring . Oh, well. At least we know they'll be back .

Happy Camping!

Re: Fall Time Hummers

I've still got them duking it out to get to the feeder. This morning I had two so busy fussing with each other trying to get to the feeder, they didn't even notice me less then 4' away! Got "buzzed" and nearly bombed more then once before they finally noticed me and flew off to neutral corners. Cute!

Happy Camping!

Re: Fall Time Hummers

They are so busy at our feeders that we have to refill almost every 4 days, the vasoline is working great.I think we found the answers to our honey bee problem, down the street a couple rehabing a house found the whole side of the house was full of honey bees. They have the whole area taped off now to keep people away.I bet that's going to be a huge mess.

It will be !

I was working with a small area church about 15 years ago. Kept having bees buzzing into my office and couldn't figure out what was going on until I did some investigating. It seems that they had found a way into the wall of one of the back classrooms that we hadn't used for a good while. Had a real good sized hive going. Church elders kept side-stepping the issue even though I found them a guy that was willing to clear the hive out for no more then the honey (I think he just felt sorry for the congregation more then anything else). I left the congregation a month or two later with the hive still going strong. By the time the elders decided to do something about it they had to pay to have the hive removed and rip out all the interior walls on two floors plus the ceiling between! This is one of those things you need to deal with the moment you find it. It gets no better with time !

PS: All I ever get here are Rubys but I'll take them!

Happy Camping!

Re: Fall Time Hummers

We just had our large party of hummers arrive a week ago. They are busy fighting for their territory but so fun to watch. Has anyone every been impaled by a hummer? I fear that we may all one day be taken over by insects as I watched one of our feeders for an hour or so and it had maybe fifteen ants inside of it. I made more hummer water and when I poured the anty water into the sink, the buggers started walking around. I swear they should have been dead! I looked up ways to keep the ants out and found these little water moats that hang above the feeder. They were $20.00 each. No thanks. I eventually found the same thing at Wally World for $1.00 each. Much better on the budget. I have six feeders out, I would have went broke. Gotta go, the hummers are making their war-crys and I wanna go watch.

Hey Honeask
Welcome to Wild Texas.I will have to look at Wally World for the little moats sounds like a good deal.Turn Keys ideal about vasoline is working pretty good so far.I don't know if anyone has ever been inpailed ,but i've been bumped into a time or two ,most of the time they just scatter away. The couple of times I got bumped I was filling feeders,I guess not as fast as they wanted.Have a great day and Welcome again.

Re: Fall Time Hummers

Well the honey bees did'nt have a chance. The city came in,the county came next, then a game warden. They trapped some bees and lady from county said they are normal honey bees, then they placed what looked like half a tent up and sprayed bug killer. After 2 hours they pulled some of the siding off, and bees had lost.A couple of hours later we went to see the hive,a good 4 foot x 6 foot, they got it all out. They checked out the rest of the house and said it was bee free, and alot of roaches did'nt make it also. They still have it taped off with do not enter signs.I bet that would have been some good honey.Well the young couple are happy that the bees are gone, and hope they won't have anymore problems.

Re: Fall Time Hummers

Thought all my hummers were gone as I hadn't seen one in near a week and the feeder didn't appear to have been touched. Saw one buzzing around it this morning and figure it was a stragler. Since I still have just enough syrup to fill it one more time, I guess I'll keep the feeder up another week. A week from this Friday will be the deadline unless I get waaay more action then I'm expecting.

Happy Camping!
