cat food question

"I've always bought my cat food at the supermarket. However my friend
who has a dog says she never does that because the food isn't good
enough quality. Is that the same for cats? Should I buy food at only pet
stores?"

Re: cat food question

Short answer: A cat will eat bugs and birds if given an opportunity, after all! Buy some "Temptations" at your local supermarket. I've yet to meet a cat that doesn't love them.

As for nutrition, I've yet to meet a cat made sickly by store-bought food. If anything, most house pets are over-fed/overweight.

That said, we do buy more expensive than normal cat food -- hairball control Science Diet -- due to having spent more money than we care to recount on two emergency surgeries for one of our cats due to intestinal obstructions. We didn't switch to it until we and our cat had gone through its second emergency surgery. That makes sense to me, given the ordeal we've gone through and the evidence we have that this food helps intestinal obstruction prone cats eliminate hair properly.

PS: Pet stores don't have some lock on what's good for pets, by the way. If you're really concerned, talk to a licensed veterinarian -- preferably the one seeing your pets, so they can be evaluated for any unique issues they might have.

You sure you're on the right forum?

Seriously, we buy Iams for our dog at H-E-B. Dog eats it with no ill effects. When I owned cats, I bought Cat Chow - also from the grocery store. I've never heard of pet stores having better quality food. My neighbor is a vet though, so I will ask next time I see her.

Re: cat food question

I have always spoiled my dog, she has only eaten grocery store bought dog food a couple of times and it makes her tummy upset, coat not as shiny, and a little bit more of a smell coming from her coat/skin. I usually keep her on Natural Balance and it seems to do the best for her. But she just has a weak stomache and reactions to food she isn't supposed to eat.

My ex-girlfriend used to work for a vet and she says the thing to look at in the ingrdients is no by-products and not much corn. We researched a few foods and found that Old Mother Hubbard foods seemed to be the best in terms of quality ingredients. The ingredients list is listed from most to least, so if you see corn or anything by-product on the top of the list, the food really isn't all that great in terms of quality. But that being said, I'm just a picky person anyway, but I have never met an animal that wasn't happy to receive food of any kind.

Hope this helps
