Over the weekend, I noticed we had baby dove hopping around in our flower bed. I saw only one at first - and it seemed to be unable to fly. Two days prior to this - and in two separate instances - I heard bird(s) hit the window. When I saw the little one hopping on the ground, my first thought was that it was the bird that hit the window and was injured. After much observation, I did witness short flights (ie. from the ground to the bird bath and from the ground to the edge of the roof). At one point, I saw 2 older dove (mom & dad?) hovered around the baby on the ground flapping their wings all around it, creating quite a commotion. This didn't last too long - and eventually mom or dad got situated on the roof ledge and seemed content just to watch over the little one from a distance. For the remainder of the day, the little bird barely moved - except when mom/dad landed nearby, the little one seemed to chase mom/dad away. That was Sunday. Today is Tuesday and there are now 2 little dove on the patio - they've been sitting in the birdbath (empty!) since early this morning. No sign of mom or dad, but they don't seem inclined to move. One seems to be moving around the bird bath quite a bit more than the other. Neither flew away when I opened the front door and walked out - and birdbath is only about 5-6 feet from the door. I came in and out 3 times, took pictures, and they never moved. Does it sound like normal baby bird behavior or was my first thought correct - that one may have been injured by flying into the window?
