Attwater Prairie Chicken NWR Eagle Lake Texas
We went to the Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge for the first time this weekend. For those interested in hiking (limited) and camping (none) it's probably not of major interest, but for those who are birders, it is worth a trip. We spend a lot of of summer weekends at Brazos Bend State Park, because of the variety of birds (not to mention that we bought a camper this year!) but I believe Attwater has more varieties than anywhere I have been in the South Texas Coast area during the summer months. To name a few of the birds we say yesterday, snowy egret, anhinga, white ibis, black bellied whistling ducks, fulvous whistling ducks, northern bobwhite quail, cattle and great egrets, great blue herons. There were also several varities of butterflies and dragon flies present. Just thought I would post this so that others, like my husband and I, who have overlooked this NWR would know of the tvariety. We plan to make this a regular stop on our birding trips.
