    Trail between the Lakes

Does anyone have any information or experiences they can share on the "Trail between the Lakes'" in east Texas?

I would really like to hear what people have to say about it also.

It looks like a great trip!

    Re: Trail between the Lakes

I tried this trail in early May. It is not an easy trail to say the least. I was planning out going out and back. I completed most of it; catching a ride out rather then hiking the last 6 miles back. Part of the problem was the tremendous humidity the week I hiked. March is probably the lasted one should try this one. But the real problem is that the trail just does not get much use and thus it feels more like you are hiking cross county rather then along a trail. Their is a lot of fallen trees and several bridges that are washed out making it necessary to cross streams at numerous points. I have photos showing what I am talking about if you are interested; just give me an email address.

    Re: Trail between the Lakes

I am moving to this area in the next two weeks and trying to learn if there are any trails in the area and came across your comments. Would love to see your pictures and get any information on how you found the trail head. I am a trail runner but would love to hike and explore the area. Any advice on how to find the trail and keep on the trail would greatly be appreciated.

Any other trails you know about in the area would greatly be appreciated.

    Other North Texas trails include:

Lake Texoma Big Mineral equestrain and hiking trail and the Lake Texoma cross timbers hiking trail, the is a blog on this forum on cross timbers, another easy hike/sum is the greenbelt from Lake Ray Roberts (455) south to 380 its a nice 10 mile hike bike trail, seldom crowded.

    Re: Trail between the Lakes

Thanks for the information on Lake Texoma. I have been there and they actually have an ultramarathon run on that trail that I hope to try someday.

I was looking more for trails to hike and run around Lake Sam Rayburn since I will have a summer home in Rayburn Country very soon.

Any one know where I can find the trail head for Trail between the Lakes from the Rayburn side?

    Re: Trail between the Lakes

    Thanks Rockhill:

I have those websites and I will let everyone know how the trial is as soon as I get a chance to explore which should be sometime in August.

Still hoping others can tell me if the trailhead at Rayburn is easy to find or how I can find it if not. Also looking for other trails in the area.

Just talked to the Forest service and the Sawmill Trial is still closed because of Hurricane Rita. When I am up there I might try to sneak on the trail anyway.

    Re: Trail between the Lakes

After consulting my copy of "Hiking And Backpacking Trails Of Texas" by Mickey Little, here's what I found.

The trailhead is within sight of the easternmost point of the Rayburn Reservoir. So if you drive Highway 96 north towards Pineland, you should see the TH just north of FS117. I did a Mapquest to confirm this but they are calling it 201 instead of 117. Go figure:rolleyes: .

Regardless of what the road marking is, you should be able to find the TH if you drive slowly on 96 once you see the reservoir.

The Sabine National Forest phone number is 1-866-235-1750. They have a detailed map that can be picked up at the forest office.

    Hope this helps.

    Re: Trail between the Lakes

There was a trail in the Angelina Nat. Forest called the Sawmill hiking trail. Its about 5 1/2 miles, it had markings and ran along the river bottoms, so it might be flooded right now. (or washed away)

    Re: Trail between the Lakes

I am thinking about checking this trail out in late September. Can anyone give any additional insight regarding this trail other than what has already been offered?

I would really like to walk throught the red cockaded woodpecker area in the Moore Plantation WMA.

    Any help is much appreciated.

    redeye,

In addition to the links posted by rockhill, you might try this one:

    http://www.bsatroop204.org/Backpacki...enTheLakes.htm

This is a nice report written by a boy scout troop out of The Woodlands. Be sure to follow the link within the report.

If you do this trail, please post a report. This trail is on my "to do" list, so I'd enjoy hearing any details. Pictures would be great as well.

    Regards,
    DayTripper

    Re: Trail between the Lakes

I was kind of wondering what kind of shape the trail was in due to the aftermath of Katrina.

    Re: Trail between the Lakes

Anyone hiked this lately? Looking on doing it in January or February (no heat, no skeetos

I'd heard that it was suffering from non-use, but curious for a current report.

    Thanks,
    WT

    Re: Trail between the Lakes

I have learned that the trail is currently planned for an "over-haul". The trees are marked with markers and the brush has grown from non use. It should be a great trail after the upgrades.
