Pepsi can stove

Well I made one last night. It is super light. I finally bought some denatured alcohol for it and gave it a test this morning. Works pretty well. I didn't try to boil anything with it yet. One good thing about the stove is that you CANNOT blow it out. You have to pour water on it.

When I had to do a science fair project for my son a few years ago, we made several pepsi can stoves and timed how long they took to boil water. I can't remember which worked best but they were all very slow compared to my white gas stove. Fill material and size and orientation of holes makes a bit of a difference. So make several of them to see what works for you.

I took an alcohol stove made of two cat food cans with big triangle holes in the sides camping once. But I forgot the wind screen, so it was pretty much a failure. The cat food can lit and burned hot instantly, so I thought it would give me less trouble on a cold morning than the pepsi can stove. But alcohol does not burn hot enough to go without a wind screen - a good wind screen is essential.

I camped with a couple of guys, one had a whisperlite, I had a peak 1 feather, and the other guy had a pepsi can stove. Wouldn't you know my stove gave me more trouble on that trip than any other time, and the whisperlite sputtered and flared as well. The guy with the pepsi can stove had a good time laughing at us as his stove performed beautifully.

Pepsi...Can...Stove?

I haven't done a Google search for one yet, but would either of you care to elaborate? I'm clearly spending too much time behind this computer, as I've never heard of such a thing! How much "surgery" do you have to do on the aluminum can before it becomes a workable stove?

(I knew I should've been in the Girl Scouts as a kid...or listened more when my friends in the Boy Scouts came back from camp!)

Yeah I did some experimenting today and found that the Pepsi can stove is good for simmering. I don't think I would have the patience to use this stove to boil things...that's where my MSR Whisperlite International comes in.
Wild Texas, I'll PM you the link to the stove. I tried posting the link but realized I couldn't. Overall it's a fun stove to carry around if you want something super ultralight.
