Ok, I always wanted one but didn't want to cough up the ~$300 they go for. I currently use a Coleman Exponent Inyo 2 (two person) that packs at about 5lbs for only about $100. I suck it up and carry the extra weight, because I like the room (me, my pack, etc, inside during bad weather.) I also have an MSR Microzoid that packs at about 2.5 lbs, but let me tell you, you have to crawl outside to change your mind (and your underwear, but that's another story!).

But REI just ran a sale on the Hubba Hubba for about $80 off, and I had about $50 in my REI "dividends" account. So the time was right.

Now, the Hubba Hubba also packs at about 5lbs, but unlike the Coleman Inyo 2, it's square AND free-standing.

Right now it's "camping" upstairs in the gameroom waiting for a field test. Let you know how it turns out.

Hey West Texas,

I have the Inyo also. The thing is I've never had it out in really bad weather so I don't know what it's capable of withstanding. I do know you have to wipe off the condensation build-up every morning from the rainfly.
The fact that it's NOT freestanding can be an issue on certain terrains. This is the only real negative I've encountered thus far.

Has your Inyo stood up to any wooly weather? :confused:

I hiked with my sister wohm had the Hubba Hubba. It was a nice tent from what I saw ans she has had no complaints against it.
A little heavy to me for the room but it gets great reviews

The one thing I've always liked about Coleman tents is their durability and ability to resist water. I like their "WeatherTec" system.
We have a place up in the hill country and my brother-in-law, who hikes with me most of the time and has the same Inyo2, and myself decided to just camp out one night. It came a total gully-washer that night. I mean high wind, buckets of rain, etc. The Inyo's were totally dry. I will say this though: ANY tent I've ever owned, the first thing I do is set it up in the drive way and first hit the sides with Camp Dry spray, and then put on the rain fly and give it a good coat of Camp Dry as well. I've NEVER been wet (knock on wood!).

I think what I like the best so far about the MSR Hubba Hubba is that it is rectangular, unlike the trapezoidal shape of the Inyo. Makes for much better space management inside. Like the Inyo 2 it has doors on both sides. The Hubba Hubba also has dual exterior vestibules like the Inyo 2, but I'll have to give the Inyo 2 kudos to the size of their vestibules. They are much bigger than the Hubba Hubba.

But I do think I'll like the free-standing design of the Hubba Hubba.

I am with you on the Hubba Hubba (5 lbs). In the last year I have got my girl into backpacking. She loved the desiner look and how it gave the appearence that we were backpacking pro's.

I liked it because we both have Cabela's XPG sleeping pads (she has the 72"x20" at 1 lb 12 oz and I have the 77"x25" at 2 lbs 2 oz). These pads are just the right size to put both inside the Hubba Hubba with the heads of the mat's at opposite sides to maximize space for insulation from the ground. We were able to unroll our Slumberjack sleeping bags (her's is a regular 2 lbs 14 oz and mine is a long 2 lbs 15 oz) and still had enough space to put the important gear inside the Hubba Hubba with us.

I believe we probably could have managed to put our packs inside with us, but why take up the space. Instead I strung the packs up in a tree where the critter's could not get to it with the food in the packs. I have Kelty 5600 (6 lb 1 oz) and she has the womens 2500 (3 lb 1 oz).

I am glad to hear that you liked your new Hubba Hubba. Please forgive me in all the details I put here, but I like to read about others details and figure someone might get something out of my details.

Are the vestibules large enough to put your packs under? I like to have the pack handy to dig out some gear (like a pair of socks) in the night if I need it. I keep my food in a dry bag which I hang well away from the tent. :asleep:

I am a little confused by what you mean on vestibules? Could you clarify please and I will be more than happy to reply.

A vestibule is a pocket of covered space created by the oversized rainfly in front of the tent door. You stake it out and, as you crawl into the tent through the zippered door, you leave your wet, muddy or dirty boots behind. The boots or whatever will be protected from the weather and you don't track dirt, sticks, leaves, etc into the interior of the tent.

On the vestibule there is enough room for dirty boots and your pack. I used it this last weekend. I am looking to upgrade to the 3 person tent though. Not sure if I want to add the extra 2 pounds so I am still deciding. I keep trimming stuff off to make my pack lighter so It would not make much sense to add weight.
