From past experience, at least parts of the trail will be muddy and/or wet this time of year. Wear waterproof boots or consider spraying a waterproof material on your boots.
Here's what I've done when hiking the section by Huntsville SP. I've parked my car on a gravel area at the intersection of the southbound I45 feeder and Park Road 40. If you continue west on the Park Rd, of course, you come to the pay station/visitor center for the State Park. From my parked car, I've walked north on the grassy embankment next to the southbound feeder. After a quarter to half mile, you'll see the LST marker on the tree next to the trail that heads west into the forest. It's been awhile since I've hiked this section, so there may even be a trailhead sign there now. The LST Club does a good job of maintaining the trail. Hope this helps. Ya'll enjoy your hike. Hope to catch up with you next time.
Brett, I'm just curious--what brand of trail shoe do you prefer. I've been thinking of going to something lighter since I've never had any ankle problems. Now, these old knees--that's another story.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I'll be going up to College Station mid-week and on my return I was planning on stopping by the LST for a short day hike on the far western terminus (Richards Section). I'll let you know the trail conditions I encounter.

Todd, let me know when you are doing the midweek hike? If you want company I may be able to pull it off.

Mark, It will probably be in the vicinity of 1:30pm Thursday at the Richards trailhead. I'm in a white Pontiac Sunfire. If it's an all day rain, I'll probably skip it.

Figures, I just booked a 1:00 P.M. meeting for Thursday. Someone I have not been able to connect with for some time. I think they were running out of patience.
Lets keep in touch and see if we can't do an occasional group hike (sounds to much like group hug).

Actually, Mark, if you're looking for a loop hike for the group on Saturday, then the one I did today might work. It starts at the Richards Trailhead and about a quarter of a mile down the main trail there's an intersection that goes right to the Little Lake Creek Loop. But here's what I did: I hiked the main trail for about 3 and 1/4 miles and when I came to the West Fork Trail, I took it (to the west, naturally) until I came to another intersection (Little Lake Creek Trail). I turned right on the LLC trail which headed back in the direction of the parking lot. It intersected again with the Main Trail; I turned left and was back at the car in another 1/4 mile.
By the way, no mud and standing water on the trail, which surprized me. Hope this helps. Oh, I forgot to mention it's about 7 miles total.

I've not completed the full LST, but with the club I've hit various North and South sections. I highly recommend the Norther sections in and around Cold Springs just North of Clevelend, TX. These trails are more traveled, there for easier to find in comparison to the Southern sections of the trail. Lots of hardwood trees, and just that little more to look at. Now don't get me wrong, I'm up for any section of the trail -- Cheers!

Jason,
Have you done the 4-Notch Loop yet? To me, it's the most primitive section with no road crossings. I ran into a family of wild boars there. And me without my throwing knife ala Locke on "Lost".

He guys, I'm still about - trying to get out as much as possible on the LSHT. my most recent trip was to guide the Scouts to a location that needed a bridge. One of the Eagle Scouts needed to do a project for merit. It was great fun and those Scouts sure know how to get the job done. Beyond this bridge build we are looking for more spots on the trail, seems some other Scouts of Troop 317 (Jackson/Freeport, TX) need to get their Eagle Scout projects done.
Anyhow, this is a before and after of the crossing that needing some fix'n
== HWY59 Exit ColdSprings FM2025, then East on 2666. This Bridge is about 4 miles South from there.
Nice huh! These guys rock!
The next project we are looking at is again on Tarkington (My Section) and it's about 2 miles South of FM 2666 on the trail just South of the Primitive Camp Site.
- Cheers, Jason

Re: LST Hike

I'll be teaming up with the Scouts soon, they are doing some loops in the Richardson/Kelly section to complete a total of 50 miles at Stubblefield. Monday to Saturday, March 7th to the 12th. I'm going to drop of early but over all thinking I may just do a THRU-HIKE during that time, I mean the trails on 128 miles, I figure you loose the loops and it should be shorter. I got to pull the GPS details off the http://www.lshtclub.com/ site to be sure. But around Thursday the 10th, I'm driving up to Cass,AK to do some trail maintenance on the Ozark trails out that way.
I'll post back, so if anyone else wants the details of my demise, oops I mean trip.
