I recently heard that the Turkey Creek trail in the Big Thicket does not allow hunting. That could be the spot for you to stage the big comeback Then you can let me know if there are Lions or Tigers or Bears
Are you and Doug still thinking of Big Bend in March?
I took a job from an old neighbor in Spring and am working in LaGrange.

Love that ZZ Top song about "that home out on the range".

Re: LST Hike
I've not completed the full LST, but with the club I've hit various North and South sections. I highly recommend the Norther sections in and around Cold Springs just North of Clevelend, TX. These trails are more traveled, there for easier to find in comparison to the Southern sections of the trail. Lots of hardwood trees, and just that little more to look at. Now don't get me wrong, I'm up for any section of the trail -- Cheers!

Jason,
Have you done the 4-Notch Loop yet? To me, it's the most primitive section with no road crossings. I ran into a family of wild boars there. And me without my throwing knife ala Locke on "Lost".

Re: LST Hike
He guys, I'm still about - trying to get out as much as possible on the LSHT. my most recent trip was to guide the Scouts to a location that needed a bridge. One of the Eagle Scouts needed to do a project for merit. It was great fun and those Scouts sure know how to get the job done. Beyond this bridge build we are looking for more spots on the trail, seems some other Scouts of Troop 317 (Jackson/Freeport, TX) need to get their Eagle Scout projects done.
Anyhow, this is a before and after of the crossing that needing some fix'n
== HWY59 Exit ColdSprings FM2025, then East on 2666. This Bridge is about 4 miles South from there.
Nice huh! These guys rock!
The next project we are looking at is again on Tarkington (My Section) and it's about 2 miles South of FM 2666 on the trail just South of the Primitive Camp Site.
- Cheers, Jason

Re: LST Hike
I'll be teaming up with the Scouts soon, they are doing some loops in the Richardson/Kelly section to complete a total of 50 miles at Stubblefield. Monday to Saturday, March 7th to the 12th. I'm going to drop of early but over all thinking I may just do a THRU-HIKE during that time, I mean the trails on 128 miles, I figure you loose the loops and it should be shorter. I got to pull the GPS details off the http://www.lshtclub.com/ site to be sure. But around Thursday the 10th, I'm driving up to Cass,AK to do some trail maintenance on the Ozark trails out that way.
I'll post back, so if anyone else wants the details of my demise, oops I mean trip.

Re: LST Hike
Jason, Your pictures were just the inspiration I needed to get out today and do a hike.....that and the sunshine we haven't seen for 10 days. That primitive campsite on your section surprised me. I didn't know it was there. Nice. About 3/4 mile south of the campsite spur trail is a downed tree that's a problem. I was able to climb through it but then again I didn't have a backpack on. There are a few more downed trees across the trail but all were able to be climbed over. The trail is in real good shape except for plenty of water on the tread in some parts from recent rains but that's Mother Nature's fault. Great job on that footbridge. It sure was needed right there.

I wanted to make a few additional comments on this section (Tarkington Bayou). I have hiked this section before but forgot how nice it is. At least half of the trail (roughly 8 miles in length) parallels the creek and the sound of the rushing water over submerged logs was a added treat. And the magnolia trees were magnificient, some were huge. With the hardwoods having dropped their leaves at this time of year, there was more of a open forest feel to the trail.
The only drawback to this section was the clearcut about 200 to 300 yards in from the FM2666 trailhead. The forest service did leave a few trees upon which the trail markers were still attached. But the footing was somewhat difficult through here, which lasted for only about a third of a mile.
On whole, I would recommend this section and, as stated previously, the primitive campsite is a plus.

Re: LST Hike
Update on the primative camp site, Trakington section - LSHT Club, has added a fire ring - I carried this big beast in my self. We did some clearing around the site, pushed over a couple of rotten/water logged trees (safety). I made note of the mailbox, I was truely amazed to see this. In it was a couple of log entries from some campers back in November of last year. Such nice folks, they made suggestions for water sources and commended the Clubs efforts on the general maintenance of the trail. We did some lopping around the thicker areas, well South of the primative camp site.
Yes the 200 to 300 yrd. section of trail South of trailhead FM2666 did throw me at first, I take the short cut now - traveling North and South.. trust me the carring of the fire ring was the only reason.
Actaully the Northern area of the trail is the best. Much more traveled and many more hardwoods.
Cheers -
