Hiking magazine gives climbers directions -- off cliff [Associated Press]
Uh,
oops!
The article does note the climb is rated for experienced climbers and the error was swiftly noticed and corrected after publication. However, it also mentions criticism the magazine has received from S&R organizations in the past due to publishing inaccurate information about winter trail conditions.
We all know the phrase, "Buyer beware." These days, with the prevalence of so many difference sources of information, an equally important warning would be, "Reader beware."
And that goes for every news and information source... even
WildTexas.com. It's why I'm thrilled when folks who've been on a trail or to a park more recently than my past write-ups share information about conditions that may have changed, fees that have increased, construction or trail maintenance that's underway, etc. We're all responsible for ensuring information is as accurate as possible, no? Obviously, we're all also ultimately responsible for our own safety and well-being (unless you believe the lawyers, but that's another topic altogether!)
