Lone Star Trail shuttle service

Hi!

I am hoping to thru-hike the Lone Star Trail someday soon. I would need to arrange a shuttle back to the trailhead. Are there people in the local area who provide that service?

Thanks,
Highrez

I'm not sure but here is LSHT Club site:

http://www.lshtclub.com/

You can email them and check. If not, keep us posted on which direction you intend to travel and your time line - someone here may be willing to help. I would be inclined.

...we are loosing yet another one!! breath darn it breath!! simi-dead thready

Any who.. I'm planning to joing the LSHT, they have a jingle-bell hike this weekend, the 18th. Course I'm awaiting a responce from the trail-boss. Any ways.. these awesome folk - tend to the Long Star Trails, I'm thinking it will be a good thing to volenteer for and it will give me a chance to check out some trails first hand. Later I hope to adopt a portion of the LST, and keep it nice and hike ready for futer, lades and lasses. Every other weekend they do a work hike.

It's a good group, Jason. Although it's been 4 or 5 years since I've worked or hiked with them. However, I need to give a little back to the trails I've hiked over the years. So let me know what section you adopt and I'll give you a hand maintaining it.

Re: Lone Star Trail shuttle service

Yes It's almost official, I've been contacted by the LSHT and I'm meeting them at this weekends Work-Hike.

SATURDAY’S EVENT:

Saturday, December 18, Christmas Jingle-Bell Hike. Meet at 9:00 a.m. at L.S.H.T. PARKING LOT #14 - FIRE TOWER (FM 2025, 6.3 miles north of US 59). From Houston, go north on US 59, take the Coldspring exit, 2025 just past Cleveland, TX. Go northwest (left) 6.3 miles to the trailhead on the right side of the road, just past the sawmill. Hike: Winters Bayou or Tarkington Loop (see attached map) depending on trail conditions. RIFLE HUNTING SEASON; WEAR ORANGE (and Jingle Bells) IN THE FOREST.

I'm very much looking forward to this new adventure.

Be sure to post a follow-up. I've always been interested in joining a trail maintenance group of some sort, though probably closer to my stomping grounds (San Antonio). It's a fantastic way to do something you love (be outdoors, hike), exercise (hard work!), meet exceptional people (organizers and fellow volunteers) and get a sense of ownership in something you love (a section of trail). I'm not a real handy person when it comes to manual labor, but I know there are jobs I could do to help. So often when I'm hiking, I notice an especially well kept section of trail or an elaborate series of switchbacks or "natural" steps and I silently think, "Thank you to whomever sweated and strained to do this because it looks wonderful and really beautifies and makes this trail more accessible!"

Surely So, who knows the LSHT folks may be aware of some trail maintenance teams out San Antonio way. Marvelous town, San Antonio (btw).

** Thinking of camping in Big Creek this weekend - Huntsville, TX
This trail has a "Bog" ...so funn, I think I'll just camp there.

Trail Head Report - ColdSprings LST Section -- Name: Winters Bayou

Work Hike with www.lsthclub.comI'm offically a member W00T! This was a nice trail of all the extreams of the piney woods of Texas. Most of the standard stuff, many creeks, low lands/bottoms, lots of distance in the varous scenery. The trial come along line with an old logging trail rail way. You'll know this once you come upon a 8-10 long running mound. This is one end of an old rail-road bridge. The word I recieved was once this land was logged to the ground in the 30s. More so, it seems this is why the Forestry Service got it for cheap. I did learn a handy hiking tip for water.. see below in RED. That's the thing with hiking with new folks lots of tips. It does seem that LSTH doesn't only hike in Texas, they've made trips to Colorado, for work hikes and even Yellowstone, Big Ben, etc.

It was a nice hike, I guess that hard part was coming back after a quick snack. We end the trip in Cleveland at El Barrito, little Mexican resturant (Going South on 59 exit 105 Cleveland take a left, it's about 100 yds down on the left.) Nice food nice prices. I'll need to pick up a digital cammy, for more detail.

Directions:

North on HW 59, passed Cleveland exit Cold Springs - FM 2025. Hang a left over HW 59. Travel 6.3 miles. The trail head is on the right Just past a SawMill -- look for stacks of wood Tip: The best of the trail is across the road or WEST.

www.lsthclub.com Hike by Mile details:

0.0 Trail head at FM 2025
1.3 Very muddy area
1.7 Iron Bridge -- Nice view from aloft of the San Jacinto River
2.3 Trail Crosses FM 945
2.5 Base of old Fire tower
3.4 Base of old Fire tower
3.7 Gravel road
4.1 Gravel road and foot bridge
4.6 Bridge on side
4.8 Iron Bridge
4.9 Foot bridge in bad condition
5.0 Power Line
5.1 Two foot bridges within 200 feet
5.4 End of Trail. South end of Winters Bayou

TIP!: Water on the go for cheap? Use a 20oz plastic coke bottel, frozen depending on the season. But the interesting part, slip a cotton/woolen sock over it and when combined with the condinsation you're water will stay cold longer. You can also only freeze half with water, adding water the morning of your journey - during the cooler months.

Didn't make it to Big Creek even though it was less than 2 miles from the Cold Springs trail head. Must have been the noobiness in me, and the enchaladas. I went home and some how slipped into a napp, ended up goind to Lake Conroe (Car Camped) got there at 9:45pm. I'll have to get the name of this Camp site, excellent place and would be good for kidds.

Re: Lone Star Trail shuttle service

I'm looking to through hike a majority of the trail, I guess I'll get my sister to drop me.. Most likely I'll need to prep and bury some water along the trail. Looking to get dropped Monday, March 7th - Richard/Kelly area (North end of Lake Conroe). I'm planning a 3 day hike, pulling out Wednesday afternoon. Not sure where need to do some math get some GPS coordinates plugged in.

But!, I'm going no matter what --- anyone interested?
