There have been some great posts on our forums about involving children (both the young and the young-at-heart) in outdoor activities.
Here's a good article specifically about hiking with newborns and very young children. And another one on day hiking with toddlers and kiddos up to age 4.
We've taken Sara on a few short hikes, but I confess I'm far behind on sharing photos of those, much less writing them up as our first of many trip reports as Mom+Dad+Sprout.

We hike with our two boys ages 4 & 7 all the time. These are day hikes 4-7 miles in length. We have been taking them hiking with us since they were very young. I had a baby backpack at one time and would let the little one walk until he was tired and then carry him the rest of the way in the backpack. I now at times carry my little one on my shoulders when he gets tired cause he doesn't fit in the baby packback anymore. If our kids do not go with us then we don't go. So they go all the time... It's good to get the kids started early in outdoor activities.
