Question Guides to Texas hiking trails

I'm relatively new to Texas. Can anyone recommend a good, comprehensive guide book to Texas hiking trails?

Does anyone know of a group or club that organises day or weekend hiking trips out of Houston/The Woodlands?

Any advice would me much appreciated.

Thanks,

Peter

Laurence Parent is your man. Avid backpacker, superb photographer and world-renown for not only his work in Texas but in neighboring states as well. This is the first Texas hiking/camping book I ever purchased, and the one I use most often (that, and Parent's Official Guide to Texas State Parks).

Hiking Texas, by Laurence Parent

If you ever head out to Big Bend National Park, which I urge all Texans and travellers to do, also pick up Parent's Hiking Big Bend National Park -- it's a superb companion guide to the official National Park Service 3-booklet set (which covers the parks paved roadways, 4x4 roads and hiking trails).

Almost forgot: Check out our Web Guide's listing of Texas backpacking & hiking clubs to find others in your area who enjoy exploring the Texas outdoors!

Aren't you glad you came by and asked?

Hey Pete, Also look at Mildred J. Little's "Hiking and Backpacking Trails of Texas". I have used it extensively. Enjoy our Texas trails, John

Peter- Backpacker Magazine has a forum on which you can post, looking for a hiking/backpacking partner. Last time I looked, there were several people in the Houston area looking for people to hike with. Its also a good place to get other trail info
