I have a trip coming up in late october to GMNP. In addition to the 4 day hike I have lined up, I was hoping to make a trip out to the sand dunes in the park.

I have spoken with a ranger, and as they always do, he strongly discouraged the idea yet explained how it is possible. Beyond that, I could get very little useful information. I was hoping someone had first hand experience with accessing the sand dunes.
