As normal for me, I decided to spend Thanksgiving weekend in the outdoors as opposed to the shopping malls.
Copper Breaks is a place that I've wanted to visit for some time, especially since the geological features are similar to Caprock Canyons. The good thing about this place over the holiday weekend is that the park was practically barren. There were a few folks in the Comanche campground but I was the only one Kiowa campground.
After taking about six hours to get there from Dallas, I grabbed a campground and spent time on the Rocky Ledges trail. The trail is a short one, but rugged and isolated enough to give you the 'remote' feeling. If you don't have a lot of time to spend there, this to me is the best trail to hit.
After a night under a bazillion stars, I hit the Juniper Ridge trail and checked out a very low Lake Copper Breaks. There were a few fisherman out and about but for the most part the park was quiet.
A call from the office forced me to cut the trip short but I managed to grab a bite at a local cafe called the Medicine Mound Depot. A Texas historical marker identifies the building as an original railroad building that has received some minor updates (like air-conditioning and heat) but it still retains the rustic feel. Peanuts are served and you toss the shucks on the floor. My kind of place.
A good holiday weekend.
