I am looking to take a group of boy scouts to cap rock canyon next June (2005). looking for any advice. We want to spend 5 days hiking the old railroad line. anyone done this? any info would be very helpful. thanks in advance

I have done portions of this trail. It is a great hike, with a lot of historical facts along the way.

The trail itself is FLAT. There are several good camp spots along the way. My favorite was camping right outside the old railroad tunnel. We climbed up on the top and took pictures, it seems like you can see for miles from up there.

Be sure to get through the tunnel as fast as possible though. The amount of dust a group of people kicks up is overwhelming.

thanks for replying, from what information is available in the web, it looks like there are places to refill with water about every 10 miles or so, is that correct

There is water along the trail, but I would not count on it. Last time I was there the tanks were full, but I have heard of other people coming across them and them being empty. Check the map and it should show the location of the tanks, and you might could contact the park and make sure that they will be filled.
