Re: Buffalo River Trails

I've made two trips up there and it's a wonderful area. Do you have maps and a guidebook?

Re: Buffalo River Trails

I've camped there before--tents. But no hiking, just kayaking/canoeing.

Re: Buffalo River Trails

I'm planning my first kayaking trip up there in early May. It should be beautiful even though it might be a little late for the dogwoods and redbuds.

Re: Buffalo River Trails

Ploddin Tod,
Thanks for the response. I'll be going up from the Fort Worth area. I figure 6 to 8 hours. Have you done any backpacking in the area? Any suggestions as to trailheads?

Re: Buffalo River Trails

I don't know how long it would take you to get up there but you're a lot closer than me. I'm about 8 hours from the Ouachitas. Arkansas has a bunch of great backpacking areas but you're going for the gold...Buffalo River.

We parked a vehicle at each end of our hike and started at Camp Orr and ended at Ponca. Man, camping along that river is magical. Found a rock slab by the river to stargaze. Can't beat the natural wonders of our universe.

Re: Buffalo River Trails

For Ouachita state park from Plano it was 320 miles one way. I did a review with pictures on the state park there, nice place. Not sure if that helps.

Re: Buffalo River Trails

On another trip we backpacked the eastern most section of the Ozark Highland Trail where it stops at the Buffalo River at Woolum. We forded Richland Creek, which at that time was waist high, and picked up the Buffalo River Trail on the other side. (We had to hoist our packs above our heads a la Hercules to keep them dry. )

It was a 15 mile hike from Richland Creek to the Tyler Bend Visitor Center where our vehicle was parked.
