We used to trailer camp there when I lived in Houston. The sites are nicely wooded and fairly spacious. The Pecans should be dropping and many people frequent the park for them. Weekends are usually booked solid.
The hiking trails are a little open for the most part. Of course the big attraction is the alligators. They may be lying low if it is cool. Nice observatory which is sometimes open to the public. All in all one of our favorite parks.
The drive is open prarie. Our first trip we were rolling our eyes. When we got to the park a woodland oasis opened and we were really impressed. You may find more on at http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/ Good luck!
