Re: Hello, I've finally signed on!

Thank you, everyone, for the great welcome.

Here goes my first park eval; it's too long, sorry.

Fort Richardson State Park and Historic Site
Jacksboro, TX

An interesting park because it is also a Historical site. The interpretive Center had great displays from when the fort was active.

There are sites up front by the Interpretive Center and others in the back. The road to the back sites has a huge dip in it. Might want to avoid the back sites if they are forcasting heavy rain as you might not be able to get out. The sites are in two areas I call top and bottom. The bottom sites are down a pronounced hill but are really shady and nice sized. The downside is the only facilities in the area are at the top of the hill so nighttime excursions are out. You would be best having your own facilities.

The top sites are close to the facilities, not as shaded but are still good sized.

The hike/bike trail to Twin Lakes is great! The trail is mainly shady, in excellent shape and a very pleasant ride. The pedal up the dam towards the end is a bit of a challenge for us old folks. Follow the trail to the end and you wind up at a beach. It is a great beach area with smooth sand and shaded picnic tables. There is a pit toilet that is well cared for and clean. What a treat after the 9 mile ride!

There is no real water feature at the actual park but for a small lake the allows fishing so if swimming is your main activity, this is probably not the park you want. If fishing is your main activity, I think the Twin Lakes would offer more. There are any number of places on the bike trail where you could just stop and drop a line in.

There was an evening deer show when we went; a couple of does brought their young to a open area for evening meals and the youngsters would chase each other around the tree. They were pretty dependable every evening at dusk. The first night we were there, the other campers were setting up chairs so we just had to inquire why and they just pointed at the tree and the deer had just arrived for their evening meal.

Enjoy!! Next.
