Primitive camping around the Houston area?

I'm wanting to take my son (almost 3) camping with me this fall. We did the backyard thing this Spring and he loved it. So I'm trying to plan a trip for the two of us, as well as possibly a friend and his son.

Personally, I'd prefer something way out of the beaten path, but with a young kid, I know it's not the best idea. But I just don't want to be out in an area that's little more than a trailer park set up for the weekend with hundreds of people within 500 yards from you, along with their generators, radios and all that.

I really enjoy Lost Maples...but think that may be a little far from home in case he doesn't like it in the middle of the night.

I used to go to Chain O' Lakes with my folks when I was younger, but it looks like they're phasing out tent camping for individuals.

I was looking at Brazos Bend State Park, but the only primitive sites they have are for horseback campers.

So any suggestions on a more out of the way place? I'd prefer it to have a pond or small lake where we could do a little bank fishing.

Ideally somewhere within about 2 hours of Houston...and I'm looking for woods, not the beach.
