When I bought my first aluminum canoe, I was advised not to buy a square stern canoe. 1. The stern is not as high as a double ended canoe, so a wave coming from behind can swamp you. 2. It is easier to sell a standard canoe if you get ready to. I took that advice, but I wanted to run a small Evidrude when I was lake fishing. So I bought a motor mount from the dealer, it costs about $50 and clamps to the canoe in seconds, the motor is then to the right of the canoe. I sold the canoe, but I still have the motor and mount for use on my next one.
