Re: Inks Lake June 2006

Just returned from an overnighter at Inks July 5 & 6. We drove up in the am, arrived about 11. While driving into the park, we stopped to watch a doe and 2 small fawns. We watched for about 5 minutes from the truck until the Fritos truck was behind us. He also stopped for a few minutes to watch them. We were assigned a cabin on the water, and while unloading the truck, 5 deer wandered by.

We drove to Devil's Waterhole to spend the afternoon. It wasn't overcrowded. There were lots of familys there with kids of all ages. from swim diapers and floaties to teenagers. My son jumped a few times from the lower ledge.

We stopped for an icecream at the park store before heading back to make supper. (When you're camping, dessert comes before the meal). After supper, we went on a deer drive. We saw 4 small groups of deer. One of the groups was the one with the 2 small fawns. The family in the cabin next to us invited us for smores and we had a fun time. They had 3 young girls, 2 old enough to bike ride, and 1 in diapers. They were from Tyler.

The cabins were fabulous. Even though the cost is 4 times the rate of a water only site, during the summer it was way worth it. Constructed of cinderblock 5 windows, steel door and institutional bedding, table, and chairs, those cabins will stand years of use.

With the comfort of AC, and a tiring previous day, we slept til 9AM! It was so nice and cool and dark, and the ac noise,......... just awesome for sleeping. We packed up and cleaned up and headed for the waterhole. 11:30-3:30 was spent swimming and exploring the area just beyond the water. My son did get the nerve to take the big jump. A teenaged girl held his hand. He landed flat on his chest and it hurt. After some consoling and "Way to go!"s, he was back up on the rocks. The water was pretty cold so heating up on the rocks in the sun felt great.

We headed to the truck for a tailgate sandwich before going to the swim beach. It would be easier to lay out over there. The rocks were warm but not exactly soft. Nature called soon as we got comfortable so we headed to the RR for my son. The day was getting long and the decision was made that after an icecream at the store, we would head home.

What a great park! If they'd only do something about those bathrooms! "Dear Representative........."
