Guadalupe River SP June 2006

The last park on our trip was GRSP. We have day-tripped this park a few times, including a week before we left. We arrived later in the day, having taken some side trips on the way down 281. We did stop for groceries at HEB on 281/46, those Bertolli frozen suppers are great.

We were assigned a site, I picked the one next to the playground, and 3 sites away from the restroom. After making camp, we swam for a few hours. A small rain shower came thru while we swam. We didn't bother to get out, we were already wet right? The water was low, but very refreshing and clean. The restrooms here were a treat! We had several armadillos foraging around our site during the night.

On our first full day, we slept til 830, and hit the river at 1030, stayed til 645, stopping at 2 for a quick tailgate lunch. After showers and supper, we walked over to a family's site whom we'd met while swimming. The 2 kids hit it off, so my son invited the other boy to play at the playground. His father and I sat and watched the kids play for an hour. He said he was glad we came over. If had to play one more round of "Uno", he was going to go postal. They were leaving the next morning.

Our plans were to break camp after breakfast, and spend the day in the river, returning home later in the day. My son, after an hour in the river says, "Mom, can we go home?"

What could I say to this sweet, sun-tanned, skinny little 6 year old who had survived more than a week on the road, exploring the world, having tarantula nightmares and making memories, but, "Sure. The pool will be open!" We stripped the gear out of the truck, left the beach towels, tossied the clothes in the washer, greeted the kitties, and grabbed a smaller cooler from the garage, scooped ice from the camp cooler with the frying pan into the small one, added some drinks, "And we're off!"
