Re: Best place to camp on the Frio River?

I just got back from Garner. The river is running low. There is alot of silt on the rocks. Need a good rain to was the rocks clean. The float in Garner has changed alot. There are new deep spots and also shallow areas. We had to walk alot (more than normal). The area below the rio frio campground is deep and the area below the dam is always deep. And as always the swimming area( the rock beach) is full of people having a good time. The construction is ongoing at the pavillion. There is a dam across the river and you have to walk around the construction site. Be aware of getting in below the construction site. There are a couple of water falls that will grab you.
If I wanted to float in the park, I would put in at the rio frio area. If you put in at persimmon hill or live oak, there is alot of walking.
The good news is that the water is still cold and the park is being watched even more than ever. We noticed alot of park rangers patrolling the grounds. Some were even walking the roads.
Garner is still Garner. Beautiful and relaxing.
Good luck and happy camping!
