Re: any one backpacked Matagorda Island?
Back in the early 80s me and a buddy took a 14 foot boat powered by a little 70 hp pusher and spent a day on the island to surf. We launched at port O'Conner and landed on the backside of the island. There was not another living soul on the island. A Coastgaurd or military helicopter landed at our camp and made us exit the water because they said they saw a very large fish swimming around us. (we never saw anything...but took their advise..lol) If you like peace and quiet and a whole lot of sand dollars...you will like Matagorde Island. Absolutely nothing but beach. There is an old light tower on the island but we didn't go looking for it.
Forgot to mention the only way to get on the island is by boat...
