Don't know whqat "part" of Houston, as sometimes 3 hours isn't enough to get from one part of town to the other.

Don't get scared away from some of the nicer parks in the Hill Country--I have never been turned away from a SP on ANY Holiday--there are ALWAYS cancellations. Just ask the rangers what time you should check back in with them. Guadalupe River SP in notorious, IMHO, for "selling out" online, only to have numerous sites open up. I asume this is because it gets so many locals whose plans change at the last minute, and it's no biggie to re-set your camp date a few weeks down the line.
