First off, welcome to Wild Texas! Hope you find what your looking for here. Next, an advance welcome to Texas! You'll find most of us here to be very friendly and we ALL love our state!
Not going to be able to help allot with your questions as I've only been to Mustang Island once for a very short time. Texas Gulf Coast does not suit me that well. DW and I much prefer the Texas Hill Country or the Piney Woods of east Texas. I will address your question about alcohol in Texas State Parks. The rule is there and will be enforced, as needed, to control those who can't control themselves. In other words, "moderation" and "discretion" are the watch words of the day

.
I would suggest on your drive down that you catch Hwy. 281 somewhere just south and west of Ft. Worth and follow it to San Antonio (as opposed to following I-35). Good road and much better scenery. Don't know exactly when your trip is but Texas wildflowers are in full bloom about mid-April. Great display on that road! If your interested, let me know and I can help you with routing. Even when wildflowers are not in bloom, I and many others prefer this route to I-35.
Hope I haven't scared you off with my responce. Not my intention at all. Hope you come down and have a great time. If I can help in any way, feel free to ask.
Happy Camping!
