Re: Need advice on beach camping.

For stakes, we usually end up packing those fat/thick plastic tent stakes instead of our skinny supplied-with-our-tent metal stakes. Never have had the tent blow away, though in the evening we tend to park our pickup directly in front of the tent, between the tent and the gulf. We do this mostly for visibility, since we're camping on the 4x4 section and the last thing we want to wake up to is a half asleep fisherman's pickup barrelling directly at our tent. This used to be more important when we had a tent with no reflective material on it; our newish Sierra Designs Meteor Light CD's rain fly has strategically placed reflective material. Parking our vehicle in this manner can spoil the view, but you're asleep in the tent so it doesn't matter, and it does have the added benefit of blocking some of the winds.

BTW: It's been at least a year and a half to two years since we last camped on the beach there, but things down there work at "Padre Time" -- nothing changes that fast (unless there's a hurricane en-route!)
