You're not going to like my answer - I carry one of each!
I got into the self-inflating thing with a Slumberjack pad because Backpacker mag said it was "bombproof." It was always flat in the morning so I sent it back and they replaced it with one twice as heavy, which was also flat every morning. So I got a 72" Z-Rest foam pad because I'd seen it strapped to people's packs in the backcountry a lot, and I knew it wouldn't be flat in the morning.
I doubled the Z-Rest under my shoulders & hips but it was still mighty hard sleeping. I kept hearing everybody rave about their Thermarest pads so I got a Guidelight 3/4 length and it's given me no trouble for over 5 years. But I still carry the Z-rest because it weighs pretty close to nothing and is handy as a seat around camp and on the trail, and makes my bed that much cushier.
