I live in San Antonio (right outside Helotes)
and I'll second the recommendation for Friedrich Wilderness Park. My favorite area is towards the back on the Fern Del loop where it is very steep and rugged.... GREAT training area for mountain backpacking.
Other nearby nice places are the newly opened Crownridge Canyon natural area, Eisenhower park, and Stone Oak park. All have a variety of terrain variation from paved to rugged.
