Unfortunately the masses have discovered Ray Roberts, including the once under utilized Johnson Branch side. As a alternative try Tawakoni or maybe Purtis Creek. Tyler is a beautiful park, but again is hard to get into unless you book well in advance. If you are going around Thanksgiving then Daingerfield might be a good choice or Martin Creek. Both of those are pushing the milage. If you wanted to go just a little further, try staying in one of the cabins at Lake Brownwood. Those cabins built back in the '30s are really nice in a peaceful wooded setting.
