I believe your thinking of Cedar Hill SP on Joe Pool Lake. If so, I pretty well agree with your eval. Little too close to the south side of Dallas for my liking. Could be a great park, but...

For my money, here would be my choices for you.

Tyler SP:
TPWD: Tyler State Park

Ray Roberts Lake, Isle du Bois Unit:
TPWD: Ray Roberts Lake State Park

Dinosaur Valley SP:
TPWD: Dinosaur Valley State Park

There are a number of really great parks in the Hill Country but they ar a bit out of your range, even more so since your coming from the north side of Dallas. If you decide on Dinosaur Valley, catch 67 on the south side of Dallas following it past Cleburne (using the by-pass) and then on to Glen Rose.
