Re: Big Bend July 2008

I miss the park. Justin and I spent about 10 days there shortly after September 11, 2001 (early October 2001). We had a ton of border crossing guards (in the air, on the roads, on horseback) and checkpoints, since the USA was in its initial "What the heck do we do with our borders" phase of thinking. Not that much has changed I guess? The constant Border Patrol helicopter overflights were a tad annoying, and hopefully aren't quite as frequent now?

We stayed in a rental pop-up trailer (rented locally here in San Antonio) in the Rio Grande Village campground.

Can't wait to go back someday. Truthfully, if it were closer, we'd do it annually. I want to return with a decent camera, and of course our now 16-month-old daughter. I had a cheap digital camera at the time and thus don't have any amazing photos from the trip (amazing as in able to be printed large and worth framing.)

We did many of the same things you did, saw many of the same sights/sites including the critters. Loved the restaurant up in the Basin, too, but didn't stay at or visit the Lodge at all on our trip -- would have been nice to break up our visit with some time there, but it was all popup, all the time, for us. And the night sky there...I'd never, before or since, seen so many stars. So many I could scarcely make out the "common" constellations, much less spot any meteors. It was, literally, heavenly.
