I agree on the Galveston Island camping but again, very little shade. My other suggestion would be Brazos Bend State Park. I would imagine it would be no more than an hour away for you and they have some really nice shaded campsites there. No beaches but they do have gators. Good bike riding, stargazing or birdwatching.
